The College of William & Mary
Chartered on February 8, 1693, by King William III and Queen Mary II, it has the distinction of being the second college in the American colonies. The College severed all formal ties with Britain in 1776, became state-supported in 1906, and coeducational in 1918. William & Mary has retained the traditional title of “College,” even though it is a small university that offers degrees in several fields. William & Mary ranks first among American public universities in terms of commitment to undergraduate teaching, according to U.S. News and World Report. It is also the highest ranked small public university in the country.
William & Mary is one of only eight U.S. institutions of higher education designated a "Public Ivy." A Public Ivy is a state-assisted institution which offers a superior education at a cost far below that of Ivy League schools.
Four Presidents of the United States benefited from educational programs offered by the College: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and John Tyler.
Named for its presumed architect, the Sir Christopher Wren Building was completed in 1697 and provided classrooms, library, dining hall, and a chapel for generations of William & Mary students. It is the oldest academic building in continuous use in the U.S., and classes are still taught within its walls.
Enjoy the many public performances of the various student groups: William & Mary Theatre, Concert and Sunday Series; Choir; Band; Speakers Forum. In the summer Williams & Mary hosts the Virginia Shakespeare Festival.
An association of more than 1,600 people in the Williamsburg, Virginia area who wish to continue to study and learn after retirement. There are no tests or grades. Members participate purely for the joy of learning.
William & Mary Elderhostel
The William & Mary Elderhostel is the nation's first and the world's largest educational and travel organization for adults aged 55 and older. They provide outstanding educational instruction from College faculty and community experts and historians. Their summer Intergenerational program is great to experience with grandchildren. They also offer Christmas programs.
The collection has grown to almost 4,000 works of art from many cultures and historical eras. The strength of the collection is the holdings in English and American portraits of the 17th and 18th centuries that are nationally important; a survey collection of European and American prints and drawings from the 16th through the 20th centuries; Japanese prints; African art; Asian ceramics; and a major collection of Abstract Expressionist paintings, drawings, and watercolors.
The permanent collection is supplemented and enhanced by numerous special exhibitions that bring works of art from public and private collections worldwide. Numerous educational opportunities are offered throughout the year in conjunction with the permanent collection and loan exhibitions, including lectures, gallery talks, demonstrations, seminars, and symposia.
The Reves Center for International Studies promotes international education and global awareness at the College of William & Mary through its education abroad programs, support for international students and scholars, on-campus events and programming, and advancement of internationally-focused research and learning. The Reves Center provides funding support for dozens of distinguished speakers, conferences, concerts, seminars, films, and other public programs each year.
Few colleges in America can boast of the combination of athletic and academic excellence that is found at the College of William & Mary. Each year, more than 500 Tribe student-athletes, competing on 23 Division I teams, prove that it is possible to simultaneously excel at the highest levels of athletics and academics.
